The month of Sawan is considered as one of the most auspicious months of the Hindu calendar. The entire month is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati as it is believed that they come to the earth in this period and bless their devotees with the best boons. The Chaturdashi tithi of the Krishna Paksha is celebrated as Shivratri every month, which makes a total of 12 Shivratris in a year. The most important among them all is Sawan Shivratri, which falls on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of the Shravana month. Another important Shivratri comes in the month of February or March and is known as the Maha Shivratri. Sawan Shivratri is marked by fasting for the whole day in devotion to Lord Shiva and begets desired blessings for the devotee who performs the fast and puja whole heartedly. The day is celebrated with great fervor in most of the temples of North India. Thousands of devotees of Lord Shiva throng the temples to perform Rudra Abhishek.
