The first mention of Assam can be traced back to the Mahabharata where there is a reference of a kingdom which was then called Kamrup. Archaeological remains from the Gupta Empire as old as the 7th century have been found in Assam.

Assam was ruled by the Ahom tribes who hail from Myanmar during 1228. This is when Hinduism became popular in the state. The Ahoms ruled for almost 6 centuries.

It was post Independence that Assam was declared as an independent state and most of the regions that came under the Northeast region automatically fell under Assam. The states gradually got divided in 7 different states, Assam still being the largest.

The rainfall in this state is heavy, so visiting the state during this time is not a good idea since you will find it tough to check out the different places here and traveling becomes an issue. Winters are the best time to visit Assam since it is cool and you can avoid the otherwise humid climate that this state is famous for. The best time to visit Assam is between the months of November to May.
